- Hindu Vidyalaya Registration
New session for the Vidyalaya will be starting on September 07,
2008. Registration for this year will take place on August 17, 24
and 31, 2008 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM at the Mandir. For more

- Hindu Camp 2008
From June 27-29 The Hindu Society was involved in a youth camp for 18
boisterous and energetic youngsters ages 8-15. The camp took place
at
Camp
Gardner
nestled along the banks of the
Bow
River
and very close to Bragg Creek. The children were involved in a
nature walk/hike, sports activities and a 3km obstacle course. The
youths also participated in sessions of yoga, meditation, youth leadership
and right conduct. The children came back from the camp with smiles
on their faces, an enjoyable understanding of their culture and religion,
and probably just a little bit tired.
We are very grateful to the following individuals who
dedicated their time and energy in facilitating sessions for the children
that emphasized our Hindu Culture.
Panditji Vinod Sodiyal: For his pujas and arti
on our first night. For speaking to the children about earth, fire,
and water and how these elements are essential to our environment and the
role they play in many religious rites such as havans and Prasad.
Panditji Hari Shanker Dabral: For exciting and
encouraging our youth to ask questions about their religion and then
providing invaluable and extremely knowledgeable answers while keeping in
mind the level of his audience. Panditji was also responsible in
volunteering his time in teaching the youths about our physical bodies and
our spiritual minds through yoga and meditation.
Chandran Iyer: For sharing stories of life
lessons and right conduct that the children enjoyed. Also for
providing our youths a path towards strong values and leadership.
Chandranji’s acronyms will be remembered by all of the youngsters and
even the adult volunteers.
This event could not have been pulled together
without the help of many volunteers and we are grateful for their service

- Guru Poornima - Cultural and Fund Raising Event
Hindu Society is celebrating Guru Poornima on Friday, July 18th from 6:00
to 10:00 PM. This is going to be a Cultural and Fund Raising
event. You can get pledge cards for the fund raising from the Mandir

Cultural Program |
- Bhagvad Geeta Pravachan
Chinmay Mission of Calgary is hosting Annual Yagna in the Mandir from
July 21 to 27, 2008. There will be Pravachan on the 6th chapter of
Bhagvad Geeta daily from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. All are welcome to join.

- Hindu Study Circle
The
Hindu Study Circle
meetings are held at
2:00pm
on the second Saturday of each month in the Mandir. For more
information on these meetings, please contact Dr. G.N. Sharma at 241-2391.
- Dinner at the Drop-in Centre
The Hindu Society provides a vegetarian meal
to needy people once a month at the Drop-in Centre. Any volunteer help for this worthy cause is greatly appreciated.

Please come and join for Geeta recitation and discussion every
Sunday from 8:00 AM to 9:30 A.M. in the Temple.

Please come and join for Hanuman Chalisa every Tuesday from 7:30 P.M. in
the Temple.
- Entertainment Facilities
We now have an excellent stage with proper curtains and sound system in the
basement of the Mandir. This is ideal for variety entertainment and we offer these

Yajmans are always welcome for Sunday program and all other
religious functions. Please contact VP Religion or phone the Mandir at 291-2551.

How to book a Priest
Panditji is available at the Mandir for all your religious activities during the normal
hours of operation. To book a priest for your private functions, please contact the Mandir
at 291-2551.
The society is funded entirely by donations and continual support of the its members
and yajmans. Members and others requesting services of the Mandir's priests will be
advised ahead of time of the amount of dakshina to be offered to the
priests and donations to the mandir according to the following
guidelines.
Dakshina
In determining the amount of dakshina to be offered to
the priest, the yajman should take into account the time devoted by the priest to the
performance of a particular ceremony and in reaching the venue of this service. The Hindu
Society would like to suggest the following minimum amounts though more can be offered at
the yajman's discretion:
A personal puja in Mandir outside the temple hours
Puja held outside, within 10 kilometers radius of the temple
Puja held outside, outside 10 kilometers radius of the temple
Puja held outside, outside the boundaries of Calgary
Marriage ceremony |

Travel cost+ $101 dakshina +$101 donation to the temple

There is no minimum recommended for Antim Sansakar, it is entirely up to the
family.
Dakshina should be clearly marked and not mixed with Aarti money. No tax
deductible receipt will be issued for dakshina.
Aarti Collection
For puja held outside the Mandir, the yajman should be encouraged to consider
the money collected for Aarti as an extension of the mandir's Aarti collection.
Therefore,
this money should be offered to the mandir.
Donation to the Mandir
All yajmans have an obligation to donate to the Mandir on the occasion of pooja
performed by the priest at their
homes or at other venues. However, for non-members of the society, in addition to the
dakshina, a minimum donation of $101 to the Society is expected.

Hindu Vidyalaya
|
The Hindu Vidyalaya
of Calgary was established in 1993 as an educational arm of the Hindu
Society of Calgary and operates under a standing committee of the Society
called Hindu Vidyalaya Education Committee (HVEC). This committee consists
of eight members, i.e., chairman, principal, vice-principal, a member of
trustees, a representative from executive, a parent representative, a
teacher representative, and a youth member of the Hindu Vidyalaya.
Hindu
Vidyalaya starts in mid-September and winds up its session in the last
week of April. The Vidyalaya
offers formal classes on Hindu religion, Hindi language, and Indian Classical
Vocal Music. Dedicated,
hard-working and committed team of volunteers administers the Vidyalaya.
The vision of the Hindu Vidyalaya is to make children and youths
aware of their cultural roots and bring a sense of pride about their
religion and cultural heritage.

This
course teaches vocal Indian Classical music. Two important aspects of the
Indian classical music are Raag and Taal
. Raag is the melodic form whereas the Taal
is the Rhythmic form.

reading and writing the alphabets. By the end of the course, the students

course introduces Hindu epics and gives the students an insight into festivals
celebrated throughout the year. A
thematic approach emphasizes active participation of the students in various

course introduces principal beliefs and doctrines of Hinduism.
A historical perspective on evolution of Hinduism, reincarnation of Atma,
various ways to God realization, four phases of life, customs and rituals in the
Hindu religion and their significance is emphasized.

Library
The library is located on the second floor of the Hindu
Mandir. It has a
large selection of books on Hindu religion, spiritualism and Hindi language. The books are
written by well-known authors from various parts of the world. The books are cataloged
according to an international system and are stored on the computer. The books can be
borrowed by the members of the Hindu Society of Calgary but everybody is welcome to visit
and browse through the books during the library hours, i.e., 11:00 AM to
1:00PM every Sunday.
The library has also subscribed two popular magazines, India Today and India Abroad. For

We now have a new Panditji, Acharya
Vinod Sodiyal. We welcome him and wish him all the best.
Acharya ji was born in Uttaranchal Tehri Garhwal,
India. He completed Acharya Sahitya Ph.D (Puran) in India
and knows four languages - Sanskrit, Hindi, Garhwali and English.
Acharya ji has 18 years of experience as a Head Priest and 8 years of
experience in learning and teaching Vedas. He is an expert in Astrology
and all Hindu Karam Kaand (Puja Path).

Hindu Society Profile
The Hindu Society of Calgary, formed in 1974, has a
membership of approximately 600 families. It provides religious, cultural and social
services in Calgary and the surrounding area. With the help of its dedicated and generous
members, the Society opened its first nondenominational Hindu Cultural Centre and Temple
in 1990. Since then, in 1993 the Society purchased additional land, adjacent to the
current premises, to meet the growing needs of the community. The Society is looking into
using this land for building a cultural centre, priest's residential quarters and facility
for the school.
Through the centre, the Hindus are reaffirming their heritage and leaving a legacy for
their children. In addition, for all Canadians, the centre is a reminder of the diversity
that has shaped this country.
The Society also operates the Hindu Vidyalaya (school) to teach formal courses on Hindu
Dharma and Hindi Language.
Among the objectives, the Society promotes the understanding of ethical, social,
religious and philosophical foundations and practices of Hinduism. The Society fosters a
spirit of dedication and devotion to Hindu values as suited to modern times.
